UNDER RECONSTRUCTION by MORI OGAI

INTRODUCTION

             The story talks on matter of ambiguity, the hotel especially the city which needs improvisation to tower, and the situation between the two lovers, Watanabe and the German woman, as both of them seem to forget their past that it needs to be reconstructed.

SUMMARY

             Councilor Watanabe hurried through the Kobiki District to look for a restaurant. Then, he found it and it was inside a Hotel named Seiyoken. The place was under reconstruction.

              He inquired to the man that he made reservations and he was received. He was led to the second floor with a table for two.

             As he sat in his room with a cigar where his restaurant was, the German woman arrived wearing a large Anne –Marie straw. She turned her eyes to Watanabe, those were the eyes of a brunette remembering those mauve shadows from their days in Berlin.

             She confessed that she was a singer with a company named Kosinsky and they sing at Aikokusan Hotel. But that is not only singing, he accompanied her in other ways too.

             Watanabe heard that the German woman plan to go to America to work there and admits that America was far more advanced than his country.

             They dine and they considered that the offer was a ‘chamber spree.’

             She had remembered how they used to sit facing each other like this after the theater at the little restaurant above the Bluhr Steps.

            At half past eight the German woman drove her black car along the Ginza, her face hidden by a veil.

CULTURAL STRAINS

           The following are the Japanese practices shown in the story:

           Putting of a Kabuki playhouse where entertainment are held; implementing a Department of Communication; a local teahouse business; wearing of Kimono by a girl with a gaily-colored sash; a rickshaw with its hood for transportation; a hotel for lodging in; little cloths for wiping shoes before entering; rendering of services to customer and other special treatments; conforming on the framed Buddhist text; decorating of scrolls on the high walls; and using of car for other private rides.

CONCLUSION

          The story shows of a situation in Japan in which it was on its way to acceleration as the title suggests it needs to be reconstructed. Much like the love situation between the two people who look on to their love as it broke. It can be concluded that a thing in cherished and in wealth still needs to be kept and improved.
